Why I'm Cautiously Excited for the Shadowhunters TV Series

So, if you haven't heard about The Mortal Instrument series by Cassandra Clare, you should check it out. The story follows Clary as she stumbles into the Shadowhunter world, filled with magic and tattooed warrior guys . It's not too shabby.

I've been a fan for a while now, and I endured the horror that was the movie. It wasn't awful, per se, it was just...meh. Characters fell flat, important scenes were cut, Clary's hair wasn't red enough....

And yeah, I guess hair isn't that big of a deal. But other things are, like plot and characters. It wasn't worthy of a sequel, and so the fandom accepted the last we would get from the books was well...the books. And then, just a couple of short years later, we learn of the TV series. My friends  exploded. The fandom exploded. The internet exploded. I didn't explode.

Throughout the entire casting process, I was very wary. I kept thinking, " this is just like last time, Giselle." I've got a bit of a chip on my shoulder when it comes to adaptations, because some really great shows/books have been ruined by a stupid movie. (I'm looking at you, The Last Airbender!)

I used to be hopeful. I had really high hopes for the Mortal Instruments movie, which frankly failed. This time around, when perfect actors were cast, I remembered how I thought about the movie actors, and how those actors were perfect too. (Except for Jamie Campbell Bower. Jace will never be that skinny or emo.) But then pictures started coming out, then teasers, then trailers. And they looked....good.

Clary has the right hair color, the weapons look awesome, the acting is on point. I admit, I am excited. But then again, I was excited for the movie.

This time, I'm being safe. My expectations are lower. My feelings aren't as involved. If it sucks, okay. If it turns out great, even better.

How do you feel about the new Shadowhunters T.V. series?

  1. Have you watched it? Clary is too tall! And wears a lot of makeup! Lily was small and wore less makeup! Jace is too stocky, I think Jamie was better at being angelic (and emo is HOT). Sorry for unleashing a bunch of complaining!
