Meet Cute: Island-Dwellers, World-Changers

Have you ever wondered what would happen if two of your favorite characters met? Would they get along fabulously? Would they immediately despise each other? Would they fall in love and live happily for the rest of eternity?

Enter Meet Cute.

I recently saw Wonder Woman, and while I was watching that incredible film, it suddenly hit me that Diana and Moana have a lot in common. They both are determined to save humans, they are both princesses (though Moana would disagree with me), and they both spend at least some amount of time sailing.

Diana: "I am Diana of Themyscira, daughter of Hippolyta!"
Moana: "I am Moana of Motunui. You will board my boat--wait, what?"
Their drive and determination to save the world is one major similarity that unites them. Though Moana is drawn to save her tribe and Diana tries to save mortals from a different realm, ultimately their goals are the same. They're compelled to save people and do whatever it takes to do that. It makes them pure cinnamon rolls, honestly. I think they should discuss the perils and difficulties of their missions, as well as their love for humanity, over a cup of hot chocolate, a tropical drink, or whatever it is they drink on Themyscira.

The pig could also join them.--(source)

Both of these characters are also completely badass--though that manifests in different ways for each of them, you can see that resiliency at each of their cores. It's clear in Diana's fighting skills, her bold way of speaking, and even her tender heart. For Moana, her badassness is clear in sheer moxie--she knows how to sail, she won't let Maui take no for an answer, and if she doesn't get something right the first time, she'll try again. Ultimately, their badassness boils down to both Moana's and Diana's refusal to give up, no matter what it takes. They're fighters in every sense of the word, and that's why they should meet--that fighting spirit recognizes another fighter. They would understand each other.

The moment I realized these two should meet was when Diana decided to sail away from her island on a mission to save the world. Like Moana, she has a male companion (though sadly, she does not have a chicken named Hei-Hei). They were both raised on an island, they're both daughters of the ruler of that island, and they're both sailors. The similarities just go on. I'm telling you, these two were destined to meet.

Plus, I can easily imagine Steve Trevor and Maui in that bar in London discussing the girls they care about. I desperately want these two to meet, too. Steve would be the perfect person to temper Maui's slight arrogance, and Maui would bring Steve to new adventures and excitement.

Maui: "What can I say except you're welcome?
Steve: "Well that's neat."

Though Diana and Moana may seem like an unlikely pairing, I think it's perfect. They complement each other. Moana needs a mentor to guide her, and Diana needs someone to help bring out the young, almost childlike spirit in her (especially since Diana grew up without any other children on Themyscira).

Imagine Diana witnessing the magic of Moana's ocean and the life of her village and being extremely joyful to see it. Or Diana training Moana in combat, in sailing, teaching her Themyscira's ways, and then smiling as Moana takes on the new role as leader of her village.

This is a match made in heaven (perhaps by Zeus himself), and I can see it flourishing for years (just like Te Fiti).

Moana: "I know the way... I am Moana."
Diana: "And I am Diana, Princess of--"
Steve: "Prince. Diana Prince."
Maui: "You're welcome!"

What do you think about this Themyscira/Motunui alliance? Do you have any related headcanons? Let me know in the comments!

Meet Cute: Happy Hippie Sitcom Lovers

Have you ever wondered what would happen if two of your favorite characters met? Would they get along fabulously? Would they immediately despise each other? Would they fall in love and live happily for the rest of eternity?

Enter Meet Cute.

Even if you've never heard of Dave 'Gruber' Allen, you've probably seen him in something. He's played a bit part in more sitcoms than I can count with all my fingers and toes, but I know him best as Mr. Jeff Rosso on Freaks and Geeks, the well-meaning hippie guidance counselor. Fast forward a few years, and he plays the second troubadour on Gilmore Girls who I'm convinced is the same character, especially since he's never given a name. So, operating under the assumption that after the last episode of Freaks and Geeks, Mr. Rosso packed his bags, moved from Michigan to Connecticut, and took up farming and, well, troubadouring, I've I've recently begun shipping him with Phoebe Buffay.

I mean, can you even imagine all the hippie shenanigans they would get up to?

While Mike is the best thing that could have happened to Phoebe in the Friends universe, Jeff would be a much better match for her. Mike calms her down, makes her normal, but loves some of her quirks enough to let them be. Jeff would encourage her quirks--he'd be just as weird, and he'd let her be as she is. Self-consciousness wouldn't even cross her mind around him.

He would wear her weird, homemade jewelry. And he'd give her ideas and help her make the weirdest pieces.

She would respect his chill approach to life, and he would support her causes.

They would either help each other to not be flaky and dismissive, or they'd be totally okay with each other being that way. Because they'd understand it. They would understand each other as no two characters have ever understood each other before.

Rachel and Ross? Pfft. Phoebe and Jeff. All the way.

Phoebe: I didn't go to high school, but three of us would meet behind a dumpster to learn French. Bonjour
Jeff: Hey, no need to explain anything to me. I got it on in a van at Woodstock so I’m not judging anybody.
And when Phoebe doesn't even have a "pla," Jeff can step in. He is a guidance counselor, after all.

Plus, THEY WOULD SING TOGETHER. Those songs. Can you imagine those songs??

Individually, they come up with great lyrics. There's Jeff Rosso, troubadour minister:

And then, of course, there's Phoebe:

Your love is like a giant pigeon crapping on my heart.
Whenever I get married, guess who won't be asked to sing! Somebody named Gellar and somebody else named Bing!
Someday when you get older you'll want to sleep with people just to make them like you, but don't! 'Cos that's another thing that you don't want to do. Everybody! That's another thing that you don't want to do.
Can't you just imagine Jeff Rosso jumping in on that last one, totally in favor of teaching children these valuable life lessons?

Jeff: I understand—you’ve just been through puberty, you guys are tall— I’m surprised you fit through that door, quite frankly. Okay? A lot of times you might see, maybe you’re taking a shower or something and you go, What are these? What’s that? But you feel alone and confused. And you don’t think anyone understands. Well. I do. Lots of people do.
Phoebe does, too. AND THEN THEY'D SING. So many songs. All the inappropriate songs. Literally everyone around them would be going,

Excellent!
Very informative!
Not at all inappropriate!
All the time.

They've both had interesting--to say the least--lives, and the songs that they would sing with that combined experience and combined weird brainpower... I can't even imagine it. It would be amazing.

And watching the two of them interact with society would be a comedy of errors to the highest degree. I would watch that show. 100%.

Would you ship these two?

Meet Cute: Never Laugh At Live Dragons

Have you ever wondered what would happen if two of your favorite characters met? Would they get along fabulously? Would they immediately despise each other? Would they fall in love and live happily for the rest of eternity?

Enter Meet Cute.

As you probably known by now, I love dragons. All dragons. Big dragons, little dragons, fire-breathing dragons, scary dragons, cute dragons. All of them. So it probably doesn't come as any surprise that I've often wondered what it would be like for my favorite two dragons to meet.

Smaug: "I am fire! I am death!"
     Toothless: *smiles toothless grin*
Smaug: "I am--" *chokes on smoke*

While I don't think Smaug and Toothless would become the best of dragon friends (Smaug is much too proud to admit friendship and Toothless is 100% loyal to Hiccup), I think their interactions would prove to be entertaining. At first, Smaug might go all fire-breathing dragon and threaten to incinerate him because he's just so sick and tired of pipsqueaks that smell like beard hair and axes waking him from his seventy-year naps. Toothless, of course, would not fear Smaug at all. He's dealt with much bigger dragons before and Smaug doesn't look nearly as intimidating as the Red Death or Bewilderbeast. After a few minutes of watching Toothless bumble around the caverns of Erebor, dive-bombing into the piles of gold and rolling around in the jewels, a piece of Smaug's (arken)stone heart would start to chip away.

Come on, Smaug, You know you want to roll around in your gold.

     Smaug: "My teeth are swords."
     Toothless: *retracts teeth in mouth*
     Smaug: "My claws are spears."
     Toothless: *flaps spine plates*
Smaug: "My wings are a HURRICANE!"
     Toothless: *flies around Smaug's head*
Smaug: "Do you think flattery will keep you alive?"

This is pretty much Toothless' face the whole time.

After some time, I think Smaug might get used to Toothless hanging around, even if he prefers to be alone. The caverns of Erebor are huge and quiet, so Toothless would have plenty of opportunities to get lost and leave Smaug to rest his old eyes a lot (after all Smaug is like hundreds, if not thousands, of years old [a proper dragon never reveals his age]; he's basically just an old man dragon yelling "Get off my gold!"). Toothless would bring fish from the lake for Smaug, and Smaug would refuse to eat it because there's no way to know what else Toothless has stuck in his mouth. But the moment Toothless wandered off, Smaug would devour the meal without hesitation because he really doesn't get out enough for a proper meal.

Toothless might try to sneak up on Smaug, even though it would never work, and Smaug would pretend he didn't smell the smaller dragon coming. It gets lonely being the last of the great dragons, so Smaug would welcome a little entertainment even if it's from a pipsqueak dragon with half a tail and weird teeth. They would definitely challenge each other to hour after hour of riddles, especially so Smaug could show off how clever he is. Because he is the cleverest dragon ever; he'd never let a pipsqueak swindle anything from him, not even his dignity or the most precious jewel in the entire mountain.

At some point, Toothless would end up on Smaug's back or head, curled up in a ball to take a nice, long nap together. Smaug would only pretend he didn't enjoy it. He could never, ever, for the dignity of all that is dragon left in the world, admit to taking part in "The Snuggles." But as we all know, no one can resist the adorableness of Toothless.

See, even Cloudjumper can't resist!

Meanwhile, Bilbo and Hiccup would watch from afar and wonder at these two together.

     Bilbo: "Is Smaug with you?"
Hiccup: "No, I thought he was with you."
     Bilbo: "Uh, no."
Both: *Slowly start to back away.*

In the end, I think Smaug would try to act big and tough, but he really would feel a small amount of kinship with the playful Night Fury. After all, Smaug is considered a pretty small dragon in comparison to the other Middle-earth dragons (poor, whiny baby), just like Toothless is one of the smaller dragons of Berk. Still, Smaug would try to train Toothless to be a strong, mighty dragon.

Smaug: "I kill where I wish, WHEN I wish! My armour is iron, no blade can pierce me!"
Toothless: *shrugs* "I'm the Alpha dragon. I've seen bigger."
Smaug: "But I am KING UNDER THE MOUNTAIN!"
Toothless: *rolls eyes* "You are a drama queen."
Smaug:

The two dragons might not share the same opinions on how to be a dragon (Smaug would, of course, think it disgraceful to let a person ride on his back and Toothless couldn't justify breathing fire every time he gets angry), but I think they would get along after a few solid days together. And it might prove for the better if Toothless could teach Smaug to lighten up a bit--and not the kind that involves breathing fire on an entire town. Toothless's adorableness and playful attitude would melt Smaug's (arken)stone heart. (But he'd never admit it.)

What else do you think Smaug and Toothless would do together? Let me know in the comments!

Meet Cute: Non-Stop Dreamers

Have you ever wondered what would happen if two of your favorite characters met? Would they get along fabulously? Would they immediately despise each other? Would they fall in love and live happily for the rest of eternity?

Enter Meet Cute.

I was watching Tangled the other day, after listening to Hamilton on my way home from work, and it struck me--what if Rapunzel and Alexander Hamilton were to meet? I imagine it would go something like this:

Rapunzel: Hi, I’m Rapunzel! Who are you?
Hamilton: My name is Alexander Hamilton. It’s a pleasure to meet you. There’s a million things I      haven’t done.
     Rapunzel: Oh my gosh! Same!
     Both: But just you wait.
*meaningful look and slow motion fist bump*

Seriously, though. Can you imagine it? They’re both idealistic and ambitious dreamers who grew up pretty friendless. They’d see each other and sense a kindred spirit. And then they’d be fast friends for the rest of their lives.

(source)
They wouldn’t fall in love, of course. They’re way too similar for that. Eliza and Flynn are definitely, 100% needed to keep them both grounded, lest their dreaming gets too out of hand and they’re both found building a rickety treehouse near the beach at four in the morning so that they could see the stars better. (Can you imagine their faces when they're found, hammer in hand?)

Except instead of a shirtless hunk, it's Eliza Hamilton. (source)
But together the four of them would have lovely picnics and adventures, and Flynn would regale them all with his heroic tales, and then Alex would spontaneously make up poems about Eliza and Rapunzel being badasses while Flynn keeps trying to add bandits and dragons until Alex punches him for interrupting. It’d be grand.

#noregrets #notevenone
Together, there would be nothing that Alexander Hamilton and Rapunzel couldn’t accomplish. They wouldn’t let anything (or anyone) stop them. Ever. She’s able to get along with anyone she meets, and he’s got the unwavering drive for success, so they would balance each other out in any and every scheme.

Whether they’re in America...

Rapunzel: Who’s that? *points to those loyal to the King*
     Hamilton: They don’t like me.
Rapunzel: Who’s that? *points to Jefferson and Madison*
Hamilton: They don’t like me either.
Rapunzel: Who’s that?? *points to the entirety of the Constitutional Convention*
Hamilton: Let’s just assume, for the moment, that everyone here doesn’t like me.

(source)
...or running around the woods in the kingdom of Corona…

Hamilton: Come on! It's a great idea!
     Rapunzel: I don’t know.
     Rapunzel: We could.
     Rapunzel: Maybe.
     Rapunzel: But we probably shouldn’t.
     Rapunzel: What could really happen?
Rapunzel: It’s not a good idea.
Rapunzel: It’s not a bad idea.
Hamilton: If you stand for nothing, girl, what’ll you fall for?

(source)
...they would complement each other in all the best ways, egging each other on until they were both successful at whatever they had set their minds to that day.

And plus they would just sing duets about all their adventures. That would be seriously the best movie ever. Somebody make it happen. Please.

What kind of shenanigans do you think
these two would get up to?
