Marvel's 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' and 'Slingshot' Prove That Diversity Matters — and We Need to Do Better

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. first aired in 2013 as an effort to bring Marvel (and Phil Coulson) to our smaller screens. It's had mixed reviews from critics and fans alike, and in general, it's appeared to be underappreciated in the Marvel fandom. However, recently its spinoff series Slingshot received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Short Form Comedy Or Drama Series. This prompted a conversation on the Instagram page of Natalia Cordova-Buckley, who plays the lead character of Slingshot, about how this was the first Marvel digital series centered around the first Marvel Latina superhero to be nominated for an award.

Slingshot's Emmy nomination and Cordova-Buckley's post about it prompts a bigger discussion about the impact Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Slingshot have on the landscape of pop culture. As Cordova-Buckley states, Slingshot is the first digital series centered around a female Latina superhero, and the fact that it got an Emmy nomination is extremely important.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. contributes to bringing diverse superheroes to our screens as well. In fact, Slingshot's protagonist, Elena "YoYo" Rodriguez, got her start on AOS before landing her spin-off show, and she continues to star in a recurring role with a lot of badassery. From the very beginning, AOS gave Asian women the spotlight with its main characters Daisy Johnson and Melinda May.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s commitment to representation is highlighted throughout the show. While the show highlighted its Asian female leads early on, AOS continued to add non-white actors in starring roles. Ruth Negga had a long arc as Raina, Henry Simmons as Mack gives the show layers of depth, and in the latest season, Gabriel Luna had an incredible run as Ghost Rider with an opportunity to return. That's only to name a few.

Every piece of media has its flaws—for example, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s LGBTQ representation is not ideal. However, AOS is ahead of the game by casting leads that aren't white and showing that they belong in the spotlight. This spotlight is thriving as well—AOS has had a four-season run, and they're gearing up for a fifth. Their fourth season especially was met with critical acclaim. Network executives often like to argue that diversity doesn't sell, but AOS is one example that it does.

Fiction may not be real, but it's a reflection of reality, and we seek to see ourselves in the characters on our screens. Our identities are such an incredibly personal part of who we are, and seeing characters who share our identities is so validating. (One example of this is the girl who cried when she met Gal Gadot.) For that reason, it's important to have all kinds of people represented in the stories that are told.

As a white person, I'm used to seeing myself represented everywhere. Asians, Latinxs, and people of color don't have that luxury because representation is so sparse on television and in the media. For me, it can be easy to forget how important representation really is. Zendaya, who played Michelle in Marvel's Spider-man: Homecoming, has this to say about diversity:

"Here's what I think... I think that we have become kind of numb to the diversity issue when it comes to film. Like, I didn't even feel that way until it was brought to my attention when you come up to like, an Oscar. It's crazy because you don't even think about it — you're just used to it."
Zendaya herself is one good example of how the Marvel Cinematic Universe is making strides to be more inclusive—along with Laura Harrier, she portrayed a well-developed female character in Spider-man: Homecoming. It's so rare to see not one but two women of color in the same movie, much less characters who are allowed to be love interests (while not a love interest in this film, Michelle has the potential to become one). So, while there could certainly be more improvement, there are still people like Zendaya and Laura Harrier who are making an impact on the film industry—and the Marvel universe in particular.

We also have Black Widow and Scarlet Witch in the films, and they are valuable—I don't want to discredit that. It is so important to have badass female superheroes. But it's also important to have badass Latina superheroes and badass female Asian superheroes, badass female superheroes of color. We need badass superheroes of all kinds. We need to go further. The girl who cried when she met Gal Gadot proves this. Little girls need heroes to look up to.

In 2016, Elena of Avalor premiered, making Elena the first Latina Disney princess. That is so valuable, and we need that to extend to the superhero realm as well. For the girls who love superhero movies, we need superheroes that look like them, too. And for the girls who grew up and never got that when they were younger—they need that as well. It's never too early or too late for someone to find themselves in a fictional character. Every single person deserves to see someone like them on screen.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe especially, representation is lacking. This is confusing because there are so many Latinx superheroes in the comics that could be adapted into great film characters. Miles Morales, America Chavez, Ava Alaya, Antonio Stark, Anya Corazon, Julio Rictor... just to name a few. There are also Asian superheroes that need to be highlighted, as well as so many other superheroes from different backgrounds (Pakistani American superhero Kamala Khan is one wildly popular example). There is a giant wealth in the comics just waiting to be unleashed. Why aren't we utilizing that?

Daisy Johnson originated from the comics and was integrated into AOS (with a plot twist to rule them all, might I add). In the comics, she was a legendary character who kicked ass and originally became the director of S.H.I.E.L.D. She was also originally white. Her ethnicity was changed in the show, and it made her character all the richer. Another example of this is the character Molly Hernandez from the upcoming Marvel Freeform show Runaways, whose name was originally Molly Hayes. Her ethnicity was also purposefully changed for the show, and we'll get to see her on screen when Runaways premieres November 21, 2017. (Runaways also has a diverse cast!) Malcolm Ducasse from Jessica Jones also had his ethnicity changed for the show, and I think it was an extremely valuable change. Taking established comic characters and translating them to the big screen is one way I think Marvel can embrace diversity. Ideally, I would love to see some of the Latinx or Asian superheroes from the comics adapted to screen, but Daisy Johnson's well-developed role has proven that changing a character's ethnicity can also be a solid route to take.

This brings me back to the Marvel TV universe, where Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Slingshot are making waves. In a world where we seek to see ourselves represented in the fiction we consume, Slingshot and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s casting contributions are desperately important. Their award nominations could easily be seen as a validation of their efforts. Considering the white-washed atmosphere of many awards ceremonies, it's a good sign to see that Slingshot was nominated. However, award or no award, it's important for us to individually be conscious of the importance of representation and to celebrate the shows that uphold it. We also shouldn't stop pushing for even more diversity. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Slingshot are just the beginning; may we only slingshot forward from here.

My Wishlist for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 5

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s season 4 wrapped up in May, leaving me with many questions. However, with the new Inhumans series, schedule changes are on the horizon. Instead of returning in the fall, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will resume in January with new episodes to kick off season 5. Obviously, I can't wait. To help tide us over, here's what I'm hoping to see when Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns next year (!!!).

Spoilers for the entirety of season 4.

★ Robbie Reyes

I really, really, really want Gabriel Luna to be back as a series regular. Please, please, please.

★ For Fitzsimmons to be okay

That moment when you just copy this heading from the last wishlist word for word.

Seriously, though, will we ever have a season where Fitzsimmons are not in pain, both individually and as a couple? At least they're both alive, though that's a small comfort. You'll find me over there in the corner (still) in a fetal position.

★ Healing & recovery for Fitz

He really deserves it.

Fitz himself concurs.--(source)

★ Return of Jeffrey Mace?

A girl can dream.

And that dream consists of Jeffrey Mace alive and well.--(source)

★ Return of Ward, Tripp, and Hope?

I'm not sure if I should actually wish for this for two reasons: a.) when I wished for the LMD technology, Aida turned it into something awful and b.) I feel that everyone's story lines concluded well, particularly Ward's and Hope's. However, I can't resist the idea of getting to see more of them and bringing them into the real world.

★ More of the Koenig family!

Especially L.T., pleeease. She's such a badass.

★ Crossovers with Inhumans and the goshdiddlydarn MCU

Crossovers with Inhumans are just a given; they need to happen. But crossovers with the MCU? It's past time for them. Bring Quake to the big screen. Let Coulson show the Avengers (and people who don't watch Marvel's TV shows) that he's alive. Show the world what the agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. are truly capable of.

★ Even more Elena and Mack, both together and apart

Season 4 solidified Elena and Mack as my favorite characters, and getting them as a couple was even better. In the coming season, I look forward to seeing them grow both as a couple and as characters in their own right.

★ Answers about why we're in space

I'm completely stoked that we are in space. My only question is... how did we get there?

★ More of all the characters

Everyone was on point this season--Daisy, May, Jemma, Coulson... just... everyone. They were all fantastic. I want more of them--more growth and more of their incredible personalities.

★ More of the magic

It's no secret that season 4 was my absolute favorite. I'd like season 5 to be just the same, if not better. I hope the magic that made season 4 so special carries over into the next season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Whatever happens, I can't wait to see what's next.

Last season was incredible. ANOTHER!--(source)

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Reaction: Looking Back on Season 4

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s fourth season concluded a few weeks ago, and I don't know about you, but that season left me pretty breathless. One reason for that was because it was stuffed full of good things (and some bad). It contained Ghost Rider, actual ghosts, artificial intelligence, and even a virtual reality where HYDRA was in charge. Now that the season is complete, let's look back on how it all went down.

Spoilers for the entirety of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Season 3.

Last year, I had a lot of high hopes for season 4. How many of them came true? Let's check it out.

★ More of Elena, Joey, and the Secret Warriors ✔ / ✘
This one is kind of a yes and no. We got a ton of Elena, but not so much on Joey or the Secret Warriors. Ah, well. Maybe next season? (Doubtful, but we can always hope.)

★ For Fitzsimmons to be okay ✘✘✘
Hahaha... excuse me. I need to curl up in a fetal position for a moment.
..................
Okay, I'm back.
This did not happen. At all. Not only are Fitzsimmons not okay individually, I don't even know if they'll be able to be a couple anymore. Whoops, I need to stop talking before I go into a fetal position again.
★ For Brett Dalton and Luke Mitchell to return via LMD technology ✔
Aw yiss. I'm gonna go ahead and give a check mark for this one because having Brett Dalton back was more than enough to satisfy me. (Plus, having Ward and Lincoln back in the same plot line would be sufficiently awkward, wouldn't you say?) Anyway, Ward did come back, and it. was. awesome. Not only that, but Tripp did too! And my fangirl heart wept with joy.
★ For cool things to happen with the LMD technology ✘
Oh my gosh! Young!Sky was so naive. And I quote myself,

Whatever happens, I hope Dr. Radcliffe, Aida, and the LMD program will be a huge part of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s future, and I can't wait to see what happens.
NO!!! What the frickfrackpaddywhack was I thinking? I want to build a time machine, go back to Saturday, June 11, 2016, and talk some sense into myself. Yikes. Anyway, I waffled for a while on whether to give this one a checkmark or an X, but I decided on an X because while we got a ton of stuff that happened because of LMD technology, it was decidedly Not Cool.

★ More of down-to-earth Coulson ✔
Aww, yes. This definitely happened, and I feel like both Coulson's character and my love for him grew by leaps and bounds this season.

★ Who is the new S.H.I.E.L.D. director? ✔
I found him. I loved him. I lost him. My heart shattered.

★ Answers to where Daisy is ✔
Not only did I get my answers, but I feel that they happened fairly quickly. Daisy's arc wasn't dragged out too long, and she came back to the fold in good time. (We have Robbie Reyes to thank for that. I totally ship it. #quakerider)

Wishlist items fulfilled: 4.5/7

My Favorite Aspects of Season 4

★ The pods. The season was divided into three separate arcs, which I thought was an incredible idea and helped keep the momentum of the season going. Each pod was unique and trend-setting. This idea helped set this season apart, not only from past seasons of AOS but also from other seasons of other television shows.

★ All of the character development. Is it just me, or did everyone grow in leaps and bounds this season? Not all of it was positive, but not all of it was negative, either. They have all come so far from the babies they were in season one.

Those hairstyles. That trench coat. ACTUAL BABIES.--(source)

★ The messages. I feel like the Agents of Hydra storyline allowed the showrunners to bring a very relevant and powerful message about rebellion, oppressive regimes, and holding onto hope and bravery when everything is pushing you into the ground. Stories have so much power to bring hope in times of darkness, and I admire the AOS writers so much for using their show as a vehicle to do so.

These lines were pretty badass too.--(source)

★ Robbie Reyes. Oh my goodness, what a babe. I'm in love with him. I was ambivalent to the Ghost Rider plot line at first, but Robbie quickly won over my heart and my affections with his pure heart and cinnamon roll demeanor. He's just so good. And so sweet and kind. I want him back next year. I want him in every episode. I want him in the MCU. I want him everywhere.

I cry.--(source)

★ Jeffrey Mace. I looked back on my reactions from this season, and it was hilarious to watch my journey with S.H.I.E.L.D.'s new director. At first I wasn't fond of the idea. Then I was suspicious of Mace. Then I flat-out didn't like him. Then at a certain point, I started to like him. Which turned into full-on love.

I also discovered that I, unfortunately, predicted his death. I hate this, but... here we go:
I swear, he's going to get himself killed. I was internally screaming when he threw himself on the metaphorical Inhuman bomb. If he dies this season, especially as a sacrificial death, I will not be happy. Do not do this to yourself, Mace. If you die, I will kill you again. -AOS Reaction: "Boom" (4x13)
Looks like I need to go kill him again... (Not really. My heart can't take it.)

A depiction of my journey with Jeffrey Mace.--(source)

★ Ward and Tripp's return. This was one of my greatest hopes for the season, and the show did not disappoint. I love that Ward got a small redemption arc, and I hope that they can bring him back to explore that even further. Even if they don't, I feel that Ward's story was done justice. (Though I'll definitely take more of it, please!) I would love for Ward and Tripp to return next season through that device that builds bodies. Though, I'm almost afraid to wish for it--I'm sure there's a way for it to go badly like the LMD technology did. Speaking of...

My Least Favorite Aspects of Season 4

★ The LMD technology. However, it's not my least favorite aspect for the reasons you'd expect. It's not because it was badly executed or a terrible story. It's just because of how hard some of the plot twists were to watch. I don't even know why I hoped for this to be a big part of season 4, as I've already mentioned. Artificial intelligence has definitely skyrocketed higher on my list of greatest fears. (Why are we messing with Alexa? Siri? Did we learn nothing from the multiple story lines about robots/AIs taking over? Wake up, people.)

★ Lucy's storyline. I found it a little weak, but I did like the addition of "ghosts." I also found Eli's story line weak, but I did find the way it tied into Robbie's plot line pretty cool, and Eli's actor was awesome.

★ The first pod. If I had to pick a weak pod or weak aspect of the season, I'd say that one. But we still got Ghost Rider, so I really can't complain too much about it. He made up for any weakness in storyline, honestly.

My Lack of Complaints This Season

★ I genuinely don't have much to complain about this season. While there was the odd episode where the pacing was off or the storyline didn't grab me as much as I would have liked, the season as a whole was rock solid and one of the best yet.

The Most Emotional Aspects of Season 4

★ Losing Jeffrey Mace. I don't want to talk about it. I probably never will.
★ Um... Fitzsimmons. I'm not okay. Are they? Doubtful.
★ Hope. Just... Hope. When she disappeared from Mack's arms... Oh my goodness. No.

Favorite Episode: "Self Control" (4x15)

In Season 3, I had a clear favorite. Not so much in this season. However, I'd definitely have to say my favorite was the episode that introduced the Framework, one of the most genius and brilliant plot devices this season. As much as I loved Ghost Rider (you will always have my heart, Robbie), the Framework took the show to a heightened level of awful, and I mean that in the best way. The end of this episode especially blew my mind, which is the main reason why I'm giving it the spot for best episode of the season.

Least Favorite Episode: "No Regrets" (4x18)

Jeffrey Mace may not have any regrets, but I definitely think the showrunners should consider some slight regret about killing him off. While his character arc was positively beautiful, he was one of my favorite characters on the show and will be extremely missed.

Overall

Season 4 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was incredible. Actually, I'm going to just go for it: Season 4 was the best one yet. It's made me even more excited and grateful to be a Marvel fan. The set-up for Season 5 was also incredible, if confusing, and I can't wait to see the resolution to that cliffhanger. But in the meantime, Season 4 was an incredible (ghost) ride(r). (Wow, I'm sorry, that was a terrible pun.) It was filled with plot twists, heartrending moments, perfect jokes, and the characters who have become family to me. Thank you to everyone involved in the making of Season 4. You've made this Marvel fan extremely proud, and I am incredibly pumped to see what happens next.

This is definitely me.--(source)

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Reaction: "World's End" (4x22)

Spoilers! Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. contains PG-13 level content.

Ever since the season four premiere, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been explosive. The high-octane atmosphere and elevated stakes haven't let up since that first episode, and now we've finally reached the end... and potentially the world's end. How did it all go down in the final episode of the season? Let's find out.

My Favorite Moments

★ GHOST RIDER WAS BACK. I missed him so much. And the portal to the other world (Hell? Though, as Robbie said, hell is relative) was really gorgeous. I'm so intrigued. Can Robbie please come back for season 5?

★ Oh, that's another favorite thing of mine: we get a season 5!

★ Daisy and Robbie together was really incredible to see. I don't know, but I think I might definitely ship them. (GhostQuake? QuakeRider?)

★ Speaking of ships, um, is Coulson/May gonna become a thing yet? Finally? (Philinda, yeah?)
★ Coulson as Ghost Rider was amazing.

★ I absolutely loved the whole team eating in the diner. It was incredibly reminiscent of the shawarma scene at the end of The Avengers.
★ Daisy's speech to Fitz and the team coming together was so, so heartwarming. They have come so far since the very first episode of the show, and this finale was proof of that.

★ I am a huge fan of the fact that nobody died.

My Least Favorite Moments

★ Watching Ophelia stab Jemma and twist the knife was uncomfortable. I didn't think she could handle it. And then when we thought Jemma was dead... nope. No... nope. So much nope.
★ Why did Coulson make the deal?
★ Hope disappearing was not!!! okay!!! I'm heartbroken.
★ All the moments with Elena and Mack were so, so sweet but so, so sad.

★ Why did Coulson make... the DEAL?
★ I'm so sad to see Radcliffe die. Even after all he did, it was still sad. Though I thought it was a fitting sendoff. Thanks for the memories.

★ After all that we went through with Aida/Ophelia, I felt that her death was sudden. I was like... "That's it?" I kept expecting her to come back and haunt us some more. Though I guess I should be relieved that she's finally gone.

★ I'm confused and concerned as to why on earth Coulson is in a weird space prison doing work. That was such a weird jump and an even worse cliffhanger. However, I'm extremely excited to see what happens next. If AOS is set in space, I'll be SUPER excited.

★ Why DID COULSON MAKE THE DEAL? (I am very concerned.)

Favorite Quote
Overall

This season finale was so good. While it wasn't what I expected and I had a complaint or two, I overall absolutely loved it. It was everything you could hope for from a season finale, and I think it was a worthy end to an absolutely incredible season. Heartbreaking and filled with all the plot twists, it kept me guessing until the very end... and beyond. I'll definitely be on the edge of my seat until next season. I absolutely can't wait.
