The Next Generation of Star Wars Nerds

In 1977, the first Star Wars movie released in theaters. Since then, it’s become a cultural icon, and its impact has been felt by many. Now, with the release of Episode VII, even more people are discovering a galaxy far, far away.

When the original trilogy first released, it was unlike anything created up to that point. Its impact was huge, particularly its special effects and its sci-fi plot line. To say it exploded would be an understatement--Lucas himself wasn’t even sure how well Star Wars would do in theaters. However, Star Wars has become a household name.

Star Wars was again brought back to people’s minds in 1999 when The Phantom Menace was released, followed by two more films. While many fans dislike the prequels, they managed to bring many people into the Star Wars fandom (particularly myself!).

Now that we’re about to receive a sequel trilogy (something I dreamed about as a kid), even more people will be exposed to Star Wars, particularly kids. For example, though I love the original trilogy, I didn’t get to witness all the hype about it since I wasn’t born yet. However, I was nine years old when Revenge of the Sith came out, and it still lives on in my memory because I was alive when it happened. In twenty or thirty years, kids will be able to say they were alive when Episode VII came out, which I think is really amazing.

Beyond that, Episode VII is drawing in fans of all ages. It’s reminding people of Star Wars and bringing the hype back again. It’s a great thing to see. The story continues, and the effect of Star Wars hasn’t stopped with the Original Trilogy. It’s rare that you find stories that live on like this.

So, to the fans who were around in 1977: Thank you. You paved the way for us younger fangirls. We look up to you.

To the fans who were around in 1999: You and I, we’re the same. May we always forget the prequels' wooden acting, but may we always remember the childhood nostalgia.

To the fans who are around in 2015: Hi! I’m so excited you’re here. Even if you’re just now getting into the Star Wars fandom, please don’t feel like less of a fan! You’re more than welcome to join the party.

To all Star Wars fans: Tomorrow, Episode VII releases in theaters. It’s finally here. It’s finally time. May the Force be with you.
