Jane the Virgin Double Recap: "Chapter Forty-Two" and "Chapter Forty-Three" (2x21 & 2x22)

Today will be a special double recap of Jane the Virgin in preparation for the finale next week. Shall we get started?
source
So last week's episode followed Jane and her feud with Petra. Jane got fired from her TA job because Anezca put the ad for her writing skills in the school posting. Jane suspected it was her, but upon confronting Petra, Petra denied it, feeling bitter towards Jane.
source
Petra also tried to help Rafael in this episode with his Derek problems. Rafael, after moving ahead with his Fairwick deal, is threatened by his brother, saying he'd turn him into the police if he didn't sell him the Fairwick for a dollar. Rafael told Jane of his troubles, and Petra, upon hearing this, confronted him and gave him her idea.
source
Michael spent his days working for Rogelio as the new technical adviser. At first, he's depressed that the job isn't going as expected, but he soon finds fun with it as he researches medieval history. Rogelio, on the other hand, does not enjoy his constant attention to detail and lets him know this but gives him hope that he will find another job that he loves.
source
Rogelio also struggled a bit in this episode, dealing with his nemesis in a crossover of their telenovelas. (Who, by the way, slept with Xo, and I can sense some things are really going to get messed up.) He also struggled with his relationship with Dina, not feeling like it was committed enough, trying to impress her by appearing smarter than he was.
source
Through it all, the mothers of the show were celebrated in a mother's day celebration put on by Petra where Rafael confided in Jane, Jane confided in Michael, Petra and Jane had a blowout, and Anezca passed out. Yup, that's Jane the Virgin for ya.
source
But we did end the episode on a couple of cliffhangers. It was found out that Anezca can mimic Petra perfectly, and that Derek has in fact been working with his mom/Mutter the entire time.
source
Moving forward, we follow Jane as she continues wedding and birthday plans. She is a bit stressed about it all when things start falling apart. Rogelio's crew is going on strike so they wouldn't be able to use the set for the wedding. Mateo's birthday entertainer falls through. And Rafael isn't listening to her about the Derek situation. On the bright side though, Abuela apparently got in contact with the VP of Simon and Schuster, who would be willing to take a look at her writing.
source
So this is a bright side for Jane obviously, and I know this is a TV show, but VP's don't work with the writers--editors and literary agents do. And I also have a hard time believing the VP would read Jane's writing just because Abuela said it was good, but whatever. Also, the opportunity ends up falling through because after her adviser says her piece might need some work, she decides it does too.
source
Anyway, Rogelio was pretty busy this episode too, working as a crew member in order to keep them from striking on Jane's wedding day. But after Telemasivo gets a crew to replace those who would strike, he decides to stick up for them, and unfortunately, the wedding cannot be held at the the house set.
source
Rafael also struggled in this episode with the Derek stuff, and after relying on Petra and staging an F.B.I arrest that Derek eventually snuffs out, he gives him the Fairwick. Also, Michael suspects something is up with Derek and gets back in contact with Susana, only to find Mutter captured and Derek escaped at the end of the episode.
source
But on a happy note, the Villanueva family is reunited in a small gathering at the hospital--Mateo was sick on his birthday :'(-- and they reflect back on the year they've had and how much everyone has grown. Also, it was strongly hinted Rafael still loves Jane. It took me a while to like Michael again, but through it all, my Rafael shipper heart has survived. What a predicament.
source
Alright guys, next week is the last episode. Are you ready? Because I am.

Jane the Virgin Recap: "Chapter Forty-One" (2x20)

Yet another great episode. Let's get started, shall we?
source
We start with a flashback of young Jane saving money in her piggy bank, then flash forward to the present where she is picking out rugs for Mateo's room with Michael. They get interrupted by room service, along with the daily paper with its top story about Michael corrupting the Sin Rostro investigation. Rafael's brother isn't too happy either because they knew about his boat. Petra also isn't happy about it, but her medication seems to be working better. Meanwhile, Anezca (I'd been spelling it wrong) has a new job at the hotel, but she isn't doing a very good job.
source
Jane is also upset she isn't seeing Mateo as often, then runs into the sitter outside and says she'll take Mateo off her hands. While walking, she talks with Xo, who wants to audition for a small role in Rogelio's telenovela. Meanwhile, Rogelio is busy with the head writer, but Dina must be off soon as well for more casting. Later, Rafael comes by to pick up Mateo and is upset Jane has him on his day. They agree they need to work out a custody system. Even later, Jane decides to buy everything for Mateo's room, when Michael walks in and says he's been fired.
source
In order to work everything out, Michael says he'll look for a new job and Jane will pick up extra shifts. But when she goes to ask Scott, he says her shifts will be spent training Anezca. Meanwhile, Xo asks Rogelio about the part, and he immediately gives it to her. But she catches him whiffing the head writer's hair and suspects something is up. Later, Jane starts training with Anezca, but things aren't really clicking with her. Jane tries to concentrate on work, and as she's serving a guest she overhears how the guest's son needs help with a college essay and she'd be willing to pay big bucks, so Jane pitches herself and gets the job.
source
Jane tells this to Xo, but she's too distracted because she knows Rogelio is sleeping with Dina, and Dina isn't too happy he hired Xo, because she's not sure Xo can act. Later, Jane and Rafael meet up with the custody lawyer, but when they start dividing up time, things start to get complicated. The next day, Jane has trouble leaving Mateo to go to work, and Anezca still isn't getting better. Also, Petra isn't sure Rafael trusts her with the trust money for the girls.
source
Meanwhile. Xo struggles at the telenovela, but Rogelio assures her he'll fix it. Jane is also struggling when she realizes she isn't really helping that kid write his essay, but actually writing it herself. She decides to quit, but then Michael says no one's hiring him because of his reputation. He later goes to meet with Rogelio because Rogelio could possibly clear up his reputation. Also, Xo's bad acting can't be fixed in editing, so Rogelio has to tell her she's fired.
source
Later, Petra confronts Rafael about not being able to control the twin's trust fund when Jane can control Mateo's, and he says it's because he trusts Jane more. Speaking of Jane, she's with the kid she's mentoring, and she finds a way to get through to him and help him write his own essay. Also, Xo accepts being fired, but thinks it's for the best because she doesn't like being around Rogelio and Dina. Rogelio says he doesn't really like her, but when he thinks about it, he probably does.
source
Later, Anezca gets her first tip, much to Jane's amazement. But Jane's joy is later crushed when the mom of the kid she's mentoring doesn't like the essay because it's all about drumming, and she doesn't want her kid to go into that. Jane says she'll rewrite it, but the entire situation makes her think about Rafael's custody, and she agrees to let Rafael have a month vacation with him. Later, Rogelio tells Dina about Xo knowing they were a thing, and Dina assures him that they're not, which hurts him.
source
At the hotel, Jane and Rafael are glad things are working out, but Petra is jealous of their relationship. She tells Anezca about this, and Anezca starts to dislike Jane as well. Later, as Jane writes the essay for that kid, she realizes her priorities are in the wrong place. She wants to spend more time with Mateo, so she tells Michael she has to step back on work, which is okay for now, because he found a new job under Rogelio. Jane is happy, and with Rafael's support she is able to back out of the extra shifts at work. Meanwhile, Anezca sends in an ad to Jane's school for essay writing, which you just don't do.
source
That night, Petra goes to Rafael and he apologizes for not trusting her, but she agrees it's a process. But she also calls him out on lying, so he comes clean to his brother about telling the police about the boat, and we end with his brother making a call saying "let's get him."

Jane the Virgin Recap: "Chapter Forty" (2x20)

Another week, another Jane the Virgin. Let's do this!
source
We start with a flashback of young Jane convincing Abuela and Xo to let her take salsa lessons, but she ends up hating the lessons and doesn't want to perform in the show. Abuela says she must, since it's a matter of principle, but Xo lets her skip the show. In present day, Jane is writing about a new character, a zesty salsa dancer, when Michael interrupts and says they must be on their way to see the flooded house. Xo and Jane have to ride in separate cars though since they're still fighting.
source
At the house, an insurance provider assesses the damage, but Jane and Xo won't stop bickering. Eventually, Xo says she won't watch Mateo anymore, and Michael offers. We get interrupted by a text from Rogelio, who is getting in trouble with his producers for building the set. He makes up something about how it's for his telenovela but now must work it into the story line. Meanwhile, Rafael is stressed about the insider deal he made when someone named Barbara calls. He needs Petra, but she's busy with her new twin sister who apparently was dropped at an orphanage and, when she saw a picture of Petra in a magazine, rushed to find her.
source
Rafael walks in to tell Petra the news and finds the twin instead but is soon given a recap. He then tells Petra about the Barbara lady who can help with hotel stuff, but they don't know if they can afford it. Later, Michael watches Mateo while Jane talks with her adviser, who still doesn't like her writing. She goes back to the hotel and meets Rafael on the way up to get Mateo, but as they make the hand off from Michael, Mateo calls Michael Dada.
source
Later, Jane wishes she could tell her mom about the incident, but she's still mad at her. Rogelio is busy with the set trouble since none of his writers have been able to write a good script taking place in a humble house. Rogelio goes to his old writer in order to make it work. Meanwhile, Rafael and Petra talk to Barbara who really likes them. At the same time, Jane gets back into her novel with zest, but Rafael interrupts it, asking for more time with Mateo. She agrees, but must be on her way, when she finds Rogelio in her office at school, everything filled with wedding supplies. He asks about her wedding dress, but she won't go back because she's still in a fight with her mom. That's when Jane's adviser walks in on the wedding palooza.
source
Jane later tries to apologize when they are reviewing her writing, but her professor isn't having it, and so Jane storms out. We then go to Petra and her sister visiting her mother in jail. She apparently couldn't afford two kids, so she dropped one at an orphanage. Magda claims Petra is cold-hearted, but Petra lets her sister stay with her. At the same time, Jane is deciding on a wedding dress without her mom. Later, Inezca (Petra's sister) is found stealing wallets. Later than that, Jane finds out advisers are the one who decide whether or not students stay in the grad program the following year. She goes to apologize to hers but must rewrite according to her adviser's standards.
source
Eventually Jane has to go look at wallpaper and leaves Mateo with Rafael. When she arrives, she finds her mother on the set as well. Rogelio tries to get them to work it out, but they won't. He later laments to the head writer about this, and she apparently tells him what's really going on with them. On the other hand, Petra is still dealing with her twin, who slaps Barbara in the face when she mistakes her for Petra.
source
Rafael then has to give Mateo over to Jane, so she has to take Mateo to the meeting with her adviser. Everything becomes too overwhelming though, and she bursts into tears. Meanwhile, Rafael and Petra try to apologize to Barbara, and Inezca apologizes a little too much. Barbara is forgiving, but another hotel bid higher for her. If they can match it, she'll give in, but in order to do that, Rafael would have to use the money from the insider business.
source
Meanwhile, Rogelio invites everyone to watch a viewing of his telenovela in the house set. Come to find out, he used their lives as a plot to solve their problems. Oddly, it works, and they make up. At the same time, Rafael and Petra discuss their options, and Rafael decides to use the insider money. Also, Inezca has the hots for Rafael.
source
Later that night, inspired by her mother, Jane is able to finish her writing and send it to her adviser. But then Michael brings up how he wants to be more than a babysitter to Mateo, and they decide they'll figure it out. At the same time, Rogelio finds the head writer outside, dressed for dinner, and kisses her.
source
The next day, Jane finishes wedding dress shopping with her mom, and then gets an email from her adviser saying she's back in the program. Also, some guy takes sneaky pictures of Michael.

Jane the Virgin Recap: "Chapter Thirty-Nine" (2x19)

Ok, let's get started! Remember, Jane the Virgin has some mature content, so viewer discretion is advised. Now, let's get started!
source
We start with a flashback of Jane at her twenty-first birthday party. After the magical night Jane had with Michael, he returns to the house because Xo is passed out on the porch swing. They move her inside, much to the embarrassment of Jane. Back in the present, Jane is going over her bachelorette party list with her friends, making sure there won't be any crazy stuff at the party. Jane must soon be on her way though, but meets her twin step-sisters who want her to convince Rogelio to invest in their blog. After coming to an agreement with Rogelio she meets Michael outside where he tells her how Rogelio has taken over the bachelor party planning.
source
They move on by instead talking about their vows, which isn't going the best on Jane's part. She doesn't think about that though because she must be on her way to work. Professor Blake comes in and asks Jane if she would be willing to host a tour for prospective students. She heartily agrees, but everything crashes and burns when a stripper bursts into the meeting and starts grinding on Jane.
source
Jane now faces the possibility of being fired from her job. Petra is also stressed, seeing as how she is starting her medication, and is also contemplating whether or not to leave. Rafael is meeting with Michael to see if they could find anything on his brother, but in order to do so they would have to go against the law. Back with Jane, she's upset with Xo and Lina for sending the stripper and doesn't want any more surprises, but unfortunately they're already on the way with a party bus. At first she's upset, but decides to give in and take a shot.
source
Meanwhile, Rogelio has set up a dinner party for Michael and his friends. It doesn't go very well, but Jane's party is starting to lighten up. Lina asks Xo to get more drinks because she doesn't want to talk to the bartender who she's had a fling with, and she also butts head with another girl at the party who wonders what she's doing with her life. Also, Jane is pretty upset with her mom for getting a bit out of control.
source
But more important is Petra, who has dyed her hair brown, prepping for her escape. At the same time, investigators go into Rafael's brother's boat, checking his GPA's history. Meanwhile, Michael sits awkwardly at his bachelor party as his friends tell stories of his party days to Rogelio. He soon urges them to stop, and they do, just in time for Rogelio to bring them all to a spa. Jane isn't enjoying her party either and asks Xo for her phone back (which she had taken so she would "relax") so she could find out if she still has her job. Xo agrees, and Jane soon finds out Professor Blake is allowing her to keep her job. She is relieved, but that relief is quickly washed away when Xo accidentally sends an incriminating message to his answering machine.
source
Jane concocts a plan to retrieve Professor Blake's phone and delete the message but needs someone to do it for her. Because they're all too drunk, she finds Rogelio's step-daughters and strikes a deal with them; if they can be bridesmaids at her wedding, they will steal the phone. Meanwhile, Rafael is keeping his brother busy with drinks while the investigators search his boat. While drinking, one of his brother's friends ask if Rafael is willing to invest in something, but he's not in a place to. We go back to Petra who is taking money out of an ATM.
source
Back to Jane, we find her texting with Michael about both of their awful nights. While Michael is at the spa, his friends urge him to leave, but Michael says he doesn't want to hurt Rogelio's feelings, which Rogelio overhears. Michael goes to apologize to Rogelio, and Rogelio comes to terms with the fact that he can't be another one of Michael's friends. Michael goes to tell his friends they can leave, but they end up wanting to stay. Meanwhile, Jane sends the twins off on the mission. They come back with the phone, but haven't deleted the message. Jane does it for them, just as the alarm goes off. She throws it in a nearby bush and dashes out.
source
Meanwhile, Petra boards a bus to an unknown destination, and Michael gets messages from Rogelio, in which they are once again reunited as bros. Later, as Jane celebrates successfully deleting the message, she realizes her mother is missing. The group heads to the hotel to wait up for her, and Michael shows up, then texts Xo to head to the hotel. Without the parents, the crew has an after party at the Marbella. Finally feeling relaxed, Jane busts out some beats.
source
On the flip side of things is Petra, who, on the bus, maybe regrets leaving. Also regretting things is Xo, who is found kissing the bartender Lina had a fling with. Lina runs out in tears, and Jane confronts her mom about her being so out of control. Jane then goes to talk with Lina, and the whole thing has Lina thinking about things and how she feels like she's not progressing. Jane decides to help her with her dream of being a stylist. Meanwhile, Xo goes to Abuela for comfort and feels bad for messing up.
source
After the party, Jane and Michael stay up talking, and decide they want to share their vows only with each other. The next morning we find Rafael with his brother, finding out from the investigators that his brother's boat was clean. In a better mood, he talks with his brother, but finds out he drunkenly invested in illegal stock or something. I didn't understand all the business talk. But either way, they're in trouble.
source

Also in trouble is Xo, who tries apologizing to Jane, but Jane is not having it this time and closes the door on her. We then go to Petra, who is walking back to the hotel. But wait...Petra was on the bus, and now Petra is...opening the door? Turns out it wasn't Petra all along, but her long lost sister.

3 Reasons Why You Should Watch Nacho Libre

Jane the Virgin is skipping a week, so today I'll be talking about something very near and dear to my heart: Nacho Libre.
source
This movie. THIS movie, man. It's my childhood in a nutshell. Though they do exaggerate some things about living the Hispanic life, it's pretty much accurate. For those who don't know what Nacho Libre is or are aware of its hilarity, allow me to explain.

The Story
We follow Ignacio, a young man living as a priest in a Catholic church serving the orphans who live there after being an orphan himself. Sounds like a real heart-wrencher, right?
source
Wrong. Ignacio longs to be a wrestler, but alas, it says in the Bible not to wrestle your neighbor. But when Ignacio finds a loophole in the gospel (donating the money he wins in wrestling to the orphans), he goes under disguise as Nacho, the luchador.
source

The Comedy
My kind of humor is the stupid kind, when something is so stupid you just have to laugh. Nacho Libre definitely has this, from the blank stares of the orphan Chanco to the awkward toast chewing between Encarnacion and Ignacio.
source
I've laughed so hard at this movie I haven't been able to breathe, specifically at this joke.
source
Maybe that's just me because with all the Hispanic influence, this movie feels like one big inside joke. Which leads me to my next point.

The Culture
This movie takes place in Mexico and is highly influenced by the culture. Though in English, everyone has thick Spanish accents. Crosses are worn, spicy corn is eaten, and much hilarity is had. Growing up around Hispanics, it's funny how accurate this movie can be.
source
Have you ever seen Nacho Libre? What did you think of it?
