Jane the Virgin Recap: "Chapter Forty" (2x20)

Another week, another Jane the Virgin. Let's do this!
source
We start with a flashback of young Jane convincing Abuela and Xo to let her take salsa lessons, but she ends up hating the lessons and doesn't want to perform in the show. Abuela says she must, since it's a matter of principle, but Xo lets her skip the show. In present day, Jane is writing about a new character, a zesty salsa dancer, when Michael interrupts and says they must be on their way to see the flooded house. Xo and Jane have to ride in separate cars though since they're still fighting.

At the house, an insurance provider assesses the damage, but Jane and Xo won't stop bickering. Eventually, Xo says she won't watch Mateo anymore, and Michael offers. We get interrupted by a text from Rogelio, who is getting in trouble with his producers for building the set. He makes up something about how it's for his telenovela but now must work it into the story line. Meanwhile, Rafael is stressed about the insider deal he made when someone named Barbara calls. He needs Petra, but she's busy with her new twin sister who apparently was dropped at an orphanage and, when she saw a picture of Petra in a magazine, rushed to find her.

Rafael walks in to tell Petra the news and finds the twin instead but is soon given a recap. He then tells Petra about the Barbara lady who can help with hotel stuff, but they don't know if they can afford it. Later, Michael watches Mateo while Jane talks with her adviser, who still doesn't like her writing. She goes back to the hotel and meets Rafael on the way up to get Mateo, but as they make the hand off from Michael, Mateo calls Michael Dada.

Later, Jane wishes she could tell her mom about the incident, but she's still mad at her. Rogelio is busy with the set trouble since none of his writers have been able to write a good script taking place in a humble house. Rogelio goes to his old writer in order to make it work. Meanwhile, Rafael and Petra talk to Barbara who really likes them. At the same time, Jane gets back into her novel with zest, but Rafael interrupts it, asking for more time with Mateo. She agrees, but must be on her way, when she finds Rogelio in her office at school, everything filled with wedding supplies. He asks about her wedding dress, but she won't go back because she's still in a fight with her mom. That's when Jane's adviser walks in on the wedding palooza.

Jane later tries to apologize when they are reviewing her writing, but her professor isn't having it, and so Jane storms out. We then go to Petra and her sister visiting her mother in jail. She apparently couldn't afford two kids, so she dropped one at an orphanage. Magda claims Petra is cold-hearted, but Petra lets her sister stay with her. At the same time, Jane is deciding on a wedding dress without her mom. Later, Inezca (Petra's sister) is found stealing wallets. Later than that, Jane finds out advisers are the one who decide whether or not students stay in the grad program the following year. She goes to apologize to hers but must rewrite according to her adviser's standards.

Eventually Jane has to go look at wallpaper and leaves Mateo with Rafael. When she arrives, she finds her mother on the set as well. Rogelio tries to get them to work it out, but they won't. He later laments to the head writer about this, and she apparently tells him what's really going on with them. On the other hand, Petra is still dealing with her twin, who slaps Barbara in the face when she mistakes her for Petra.

Rafael then has to give Mateo over to Jane, so she has to take Mateo to the meeting with her adviser. Everything becomes too overwhelming though, and she bursts into tears. Meanwhile, Rafael and Petra try to apologize to Barbara, and Inezca apologizes a little too much. Barbara is forgiving, but another hotel bid higher for her. If they can match it, she'll give in, but in order to do that, Rafael would have to use the money from the insider business.

Meanwhile, Rogelio invites everyone to watch a viewing of his telenovela in the house set. Come to find out, he used their lives as a plot to solve their problems. Oddly, it works, and they make up. At the same time, Rafael and Petra discuss their options, and Rafael decides to use the insider money. Also, Inezca has the hots for Rafael.

Later that night, inspired by her mother, Jane is able to finish her writing and send it to her adviser. But then Michael brings up how he wants to be more than a babysitter to Mateo, and they decide they'll figure it out. At the same time, Rogelio finds the head writer outside, dressed for dinner, and kisses her.

The next day, Jane finishes wedding dress shopping with her mom, and then gets an email from her adviser saying she's back in the program. Also, some guy takes sneaky pictures of Michael.
