Nerdy Ambient Soundtracks for Your Day

(source)
If you’re anything like me, doing anything with complete silence is impossible. It’s too easy to get distracted by the lack of ambient noise, or, even worse, with the wrong type of ambient noise. It’s especially bad if I can’t stand the music playing or the sounds around me are not inspiring.

Though I don’t always need actual music, certain sounds can make a world of difference.

I fall asleep to the Solitudes albums because their natural sounds and calming music are wonderful and help coax me into a peaceful, meditative state to sleep.

But I’ve always thought, wouldn’t it be wonderful if the ambient noise, music, and sounds I listen to could be from the places that make my inner fangirl come to life? I mean, if I could write my articles sitting in the Gryffindor common room, or spend time reading while listening to the sounds of the Normandy’s ship buzzing around me, I’d be in heaven.

Sounds are a major part of my existence. It is those ambient sounds and extra noises within the shows, movies, and games I love that help transport me into their worlds. Those worlds light the fire of inspiration in my heart. They are my muses.

Recently, a friend sent me a link to a place that made all my dreams come true: ambient-mixer.com.

Not only does this website allow you to create your own ambient mixes, but it gives you access to a whole library of user-made ones, including hundreds to indulge your fangirl needs in.

Depending on what you are looking for, there are a range of options for each setting. Some include music, some are just ambient noise. Each mixer also contains sliders for the different ambient noises contributing to the atmosphere, allowing you to increase or decrease different aspects to suit your desires.

Although I’ve only been using it for a few weeks now, these are some of my favourites:

Gryffindor Common Room - Harry Potter

There are a number of options for the common room, but I like this one in particular because of the addition of the Harry Potter theme music in the background. Sometimes I’ll turn that portion up a bit, other times I’ll turn it down. When I really need to get my concentration focused, I will close my eyes for a moment and imagine that I am really there, hanging out in front of the fireplace, curled up with a good book, just listening and taking it all in.

Often, I will play this track while at work, drowning out the awful music and sounds of the dealership around me. It brings a bit of nerdiness into my every day life, making me feel a little less frustrated with living in the real world.

The King’s Throne Room - Disney’s Atlantis

This is one I find super inspiring. It’s kind of like a mix between a Solitudes track and sitting in an actual port. Not only is this one great when I need something incredibly calming, but it also doubles as a great mix for doing meditation, deep thoughts, or just doing breathing exercises. Plus, it’s not too difficult to imagine you’re about to chill in Atlantis when you let the sounds carry you away.

The ambient backing track is beautiful, soft yet sharp sounds encouraging peacefulness and clarity. The sounds of the chains clanging together in the port are just frequent enough to carry you away. Everything about this one screams calming and focus, and although it is a little less peppy than one might expect for something inspired by Disney, I feel like it fits quite beautifully with what I would imagine the actual sounds of their Atlantis world to be like.

Daenerys at War - Game of Thrones

Need something to put you in a more somber mood? Or maybe you just feel like taking yourself to a place of mystery, dragons, and epic battles? This mix is fantastic for that. Part of the reason this one appeals to me so much is that, as a writer and an author, sometimes I need something to take me to a darker place. If I’m in a particularly good mood, I can often forget just how dark a scene needs to be. This is the kind of ambient sound that is great to send me there.

The deep, soulful music carries a sadness to it--you just know something dark and devastating is going on. The sword-fighting keeps your mind active. You can’t just disappear into the sadness with battles going on around. It drives that deep feeling of the need to take action, to push forward with a relentless rage, channeling all your hurt and sorrow into the task at hand.

Walking Down Main Street USA - Disney

If you’re a fellow Disnerd, this particular track probably doesn’t require much explanation. I am one of those weird people who says that Disney World is my happy place. There are literally times I have become so overwhelmed with the desire to be in Disney that I have broken down in tears. It is the one place where I truly feel at home.

There are a number of places to listen to sounds and music from Disney World, with plenty of playlists that include tracks from the rides, clips from different areas of the parks, and more. What makes me love this ambient mix so much is that it’s a single, ongoing track putting you directly on Main Street USA. You can play it all day, soaking in the magic and joy those sounds give you when you’re truly there. It’s like sprinkling pixie dust on your day, no matter where you are.

What places would you love to listen to ambient mixes from to take you away from everyday life?

If You Like This, Try That: Popular TV Show Edition

Most TV shows wrapped up their regular season over a month ago, which I'm sure has given you plenty of time to catch up with everything you've missed. But now what? There are still quite a few weeks of summer left, and now you might be wondering what to binge-watch next. If you enjoy any of the popular TV shows right now, here are a few suggestions of what to try next!

If you like The Walking Dead, try Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin)

The Walking Dead is known for its depiction of humanity on the brink of extinction, of monsters attacking and eating humans, and of the deep truths about humans. Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) is also known for many of these same aspects. Both shows follow a ragtag group that is determined to survive and find a way to save their people. Just replace creepy zombies with giant man-eating titans, trap the entire population of the known world behind a wall, and add extra-awesome fighting gear and swords, and ta-da! you've transformed The Walking Dead into Attack on Titan (sort of). If you like The Walking Dead and you're looking for something new and different, try Attack on Titan.

If you like Supernatural, try Grimm

What could be better than hunting demons and monsters with two brothers? Hunting fairytale monsters with your best friend. Grimm is about Detective Nick Burkhardt who has the ability to "see" monsters that influenced fairytales in the real world. Thus he uses this gift to help him solve crimes. Grimm features a lot of stories about kidnappings and murders, strange circumstances, and lots and lots of bloody violence. In many ways, it reminds me of Supernatural because of the kick-ass characters, the plethora of monsters and lore, and gritty depictions. If you love Supernatural and you want something similar with a different twist (fairytales), Grimm is the show for you.

If you like Stranger Things, try Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency

I'll confess that I haven't actually watched Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency yet, but I was informed that the show has similarities to Stranger Things. You know, the weird circumstances, lights flickering, trying to figure out what in the world is happening. Dirk Gently's has that supernatural, science-fiction flair that keeps you guessing and provides a little terror to your experience, much like Stranger Things. It, however, is more comedic than serious, unlike Stranger Things, but it's definitely possible you'll like both!

If you like The Office, try Parks and Recreation

This one is a no-brainer. If you're a fan of The Office, you should watch Parks and Recreation (and vice versa). Both shows are comedy, both shows feature a fantastic cast of characters, and both shows take place in a typical working class environment. One focuses more heavily on business while the other focuses on government, but both provide a lot of laughs, quotable moments, and the sense of finding a TV family. Seriously though, why haven't they done a cross-over movie yet?

If you like Game of Thrones, try Vikings

I haven't actually watched Game of Thrones or Vikings, so take this recommendation with that in mind. But everything I've seen on the Internet has stated that if you like Game of Thrones, you'll enjoy Vikings. Both feature bloody battles, kick-ass female characters, and a plethora of drama and tension to keep you intrigued. If you're a fan of any of these aspects, watch Vikings (and then come back and let me know if this suggestion is accurate).

What other recommendations would you give for these popular TV shows?

5 Reasons Why You Should Watch Game Of Thrones

Everyone has heard of Game of Thrones. Most people have seen the TV show. Many have read the books. Yet there are still people who have not ventured into this new world. Whether it is because there are too many episodes to catch up with or because the show features sex and violence, it does not matter: the following five reasons will get you all hyped up and ready to watch this show.

The characters

I know this sounds incredibly vague and cliché, but it's true: if there were any other characters, the show would be far less entertaining. Not only are their personalities and ambitions incredibly well crafted (thank you George R. R. Martin), but their development matches their personalities and circumstances. Daenerys Targaryen, for example, starts off as an insecure girl. To survive in her world, though, one must be far more strong willed and brave - that's exactly what she achieves as she struggles to become the Queen she truly is.

Jon Snow (oh, come on, I know you've heard of him!) starts off as a simple bastard and doesn't look like he has many qualities, apart from being honourable. As the show progresses, Jon proves to be more than what people consider him to be - and is also part of the biggest surprise you'll get from the show. When you get to season 6, that is.

The surprises

As we all know, the most important part of a good book, movie or TV series is a plot twist that you did not see coming. Game of Thrones delivers exactly that. Each episode has a plot twist, which may be a death (yes, lots of people die in this series) or the introduction of a new character that puts everyone back to square one. I've watched all six seasons and, thanks to David Benioff and Daniel B. Weiss' (the GoT writers) creativity, I still didn't expect all the things that happened in the sixth season!

Good news: all the episodes are entertaining and the word "boring" is not in this series' vocabulary. Bad news: that means that most episodes make you want to watch the next episode and, actually, never stop watching Game of Thrones. Sorry.

The catchphrases

If you've heard of GoT, chances are you've heard the phrase "Winter is coming"... But do you know what it really means? What about "Valar Morghulis" (all men must die)? Who says this? It'll all be clear once you watch the show. Is it worth watching a show just to know what one sentence means? Of course it is.

The attention to details

Nothing happens in this show without a reason. If a character disappears, don't worry: they'll show up on the other side of Westeros soon enough. If you see someone writing on some parchment, if you were to pause the episode, the parchment could be very likely be read and some secret would be revealed. But that's not all: every costume is perfectly made for each character, resembling their status and location (meaning no peasant will wear fur coats and people living in the North won't wear short sleeved dresses). Not to mention the fact that the locations are always wonderfully arranged to look just like they would in a medieval-esque world - extras included. Nothing is out of place.

There aren't many special effects in the show, but when they are there, they look perfectly real. Dragons? Flawless. Green fire destroying hundreds of ships? Oh, they must've burned real ships to do that, of course.

Emotional attachment

I remember watching the first episode of GoT: apart from being impressed with how well set up the show was, I was surprised to see how quickly I had found my favourite characters. One thing I can assure you is that you will fall in love with characters such as Daenerys, Tyrion and Arya, and will keep on rooting for them throughout all of the seasons. The baddies, on the other hand, are smart and despicable, making them not only hateable but also dangerous - that's a lethal combination.

But mark my words: don't get too attached to the characters, because George R. R. Martin likes to get rid of all the likable characters.

BONUS REASON: Maybe, one day, you'll hear Tyrion's infamous joke

Tyrion Lannister is by far the funniest character in GoT: whenever he's talking he's either sarcastic, cracking jokes or making fun of someone in a sneaky way. His joke repertoire is huge, and we never hear him tell a joke twice... Actually we do, but it's not a complete joke!

In season one episode six ("A Golden Crown") he starts off the joke: "I once brought a honeycomb and a jackass into a brothel -". He is rudely interrupted, however, and nobody thinks about the joke again. Five seasons later however, in season six episode 8 ("No One"), Tyrion brings up a familiar sentence: "I once walked into a brothel with a honeycomb and a jackass. The madame says -", but he is once again interrupted.

If you watch the show, maybe, one day, you'll hear Tyrion's infamous joke. Just the hype around it makes it the best joke ever.

Did I convince you to watch Game of Thrones? If you do watch it, do you agree with these reasons?
