Jane the Virgin Recap: "Chapter Thirty-Seven" (2x17)

Another week, another Jane the Virgin. As a reminder, Jane the Virgin contains more mature content, so with that, let's get started!

As usual, we start with a flashback of young Jane disagreeing with Abuela over superstitions, then jump to present day where wedding planning is happening (season one flashbacks). It's mentioned that Michael's parents are coming over, and they can't stand each other. Also, Pablo Alonso Segura is flying in from Venezuela. Abuela is still superstitious about everything, believing him to be cursed.

Jane still needs to tell Rogelio that she's engaged to Michael, but Paola is the only one answering phone, still keeping Rogelio hostage. With pressure from the family, Paola decides to live stream a murder-suicide she has planned for them. (Side note: Dang, things are cray.) Anyway, Jane is worried about Rogelio and decides if he doesn't call back, she'll go check on him. But for now, she must be on her way to meet her new writing adviser, who isn't as pleasant as Chavez in both ways that you're thinking.

Meanwhile, Rafael is still with Petra and the babies in the hospital. Petra hasn't been doing much of the mothering, and when she's told she can be released early, she isn't too happy. Guess who else isn't happy? Michael's parents. Upon discovering that Jane and Michael are back together, they decided to band together and convince him that he shouldn't marry Jane.

Later that night, Rafael offers to help with the babies, but Petra's hired a few nurses who are on the job. This leaves room for Rafael to talk with his brother, who randomly appears. The entire conversation is sketch, so Rafael talks to Michael about what he should do. Though eventually, Jane calls, and Michael has to hang up. Jane is worried about Rogelio and asks Michael to go check on him. He agrees, and as he goes, the Villanueva women talk about Pablo Alonso Segura. Abuela is still convinced of his bad luck because apparently the garden of flowers they made love on died the next morning. Just as she finishes her story, guess who shows up at the door? Pablo Alonso Segura.

Also, the power goes out, which convinces Abuela of the curse. Anyway, we skip to Rogelio with Paola, mixing poison into two cups of wine, when Michael appears at the window. Rogelio sees him and asks Paola if they could drink outside. She agrees, and Michael is able to slip in and arrest Paola.

Meanwhile, Abuela is ready to face Pablo Alonso Segura. In a rather dramatic scene, they confront each other, but the conversation is cut short when Michael calls and says that Rogelio had been kidnapped. They all rush to check up on him. He seems to be shaken, and of course the media is all over the story, but besides that, he keeps saying he wants to move on. The next day Petra is seen working again, which worries Rafael, since, you know, she just gave birth.

Back to Jane, she has to meet up with her new writing adviser, who doesn't like her work. She says Jane should give it more frame, whatever that means. Meanwhile, Rogelio is struggling with his telenovela, distracted by what happened. Jane comes to check on him, but he still hides everything, excited about the fact that he gets to share his story with a famous journalist. Jane decides to let it go for the time being and concentrate on having dinner with Michael's parents, who spotlight her with tons of inappropriate questions. Eventually, Michael is the one to explode, and they leave.

Jane later talks with Abuela and Xo about everything, and they think it's because she has a need to be liked. Jane thinks about this as she perfects her writing for her new adviser, who she wants to be liked by as well. The next morning Jane hands off Mateo to Rafael, and Rafael asks Jane her opinion about Petra's behavior. Jane thinks Rafael has to give her a little push.

On her way out, Jane finds out Michael's parents left and aren't coming to the engagement party. Jane drives over to Michael's mom and begs her to come, only to discover Michael's mom was in the middle of a book club. Embarrassed, Jane leaves to meet up with Michael, but talking to his mom worked, and she ends up deciding to go to the engagement party after all. Meanwhile, Rafael is meeting up with his long lost brother, who's being real sketch. Rafael wants to know where he went when Elena disappeared, and eventually, he follows him out of the hotel.

The Villanueva women eventually get dressed for the engagement party and tease Abuela about Pablo, but Jane is interrupted when she receives a call that Rogelio won't talk to the reporter. She visits him, and he reveals he's had a hard time with the entire experience and thought he was going to die. But, while telling Jane does make things better, unfortunately, she is late to her own engagement party, much to the dismay of Michael's parents.

We go back to Rafael who has followed his brother off on a boat. For a second, Rafael believes he's made a mistake, but then his brother talks to him about the situation and says he feels abandoned and without a family. Rafael, being Rafael, wants him to know that he does have a family. Meanwhile, Jane returns to the engagement party late and confronts Michael's parents about it, coming to terms with the fact that they probably won't ever like her. After the party, Jane's adviser emails her saying she liked her work. Later that night, Rafael calls Michael and says he doesn't want to be part of the investigation anymore because he trusts his brother, but guess who doesn't?

Later, Rafael decides to have a family night with Petra and the babies, and Petra slowly starts warming up to them. Also, Abuela dances the night away with Pablo at the same time a leak bursts through and floods the Villanueva house. So maybe that curse is real?
