Spoilers for the entirety of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Season 3.
Last year, I presented my wishlist for Season 3. Let's see how many of my wishlist items came true.
We got this a thousand times over. We even got a bionic shield to boot!
★ Skye becoming Daisy ✔
Yes. This definitely happened. It happened so much that Daisy got overwhelmed and went off the grid. Now we don't even know where she is.
★ The Secret Warriors ✔
They have arrived! Unfortunately, they're down a member, but at least the team is assembled, right?
★ More Bobbi and Hunter ✔
We did definitely get this. However, now they're gone, and their spinoff was canceled, sooo... awkward.
★ Mockingbird ✘
Eh. Not really. Though Bobbi did continue to kick butt and take names, she didn't do so under the Mockingbird mantle.
★ Crossovers between the MCU and AOS ✘
Ugh, no. Despite the perfect opportunity to reference Inhumans or something in Captain America: Civil War, nothing happened on this front, much to my disappointment.
★ More Mack ✔
★ Answers on what happened to Jemma ✔
Definitely got the answers I was looking for.
★ Gideon Malick. It's weird to say this, but he was a highlight of the season for me. He was an awful person but a highlight nonetheless.
My Favorite Aspects of Season 3
★ Lash/Andrew Garner. Seeing May's ex brought back was a real treat, and seeing his secret identity as a murderous supervillain was even better. I loved his whole character arc--the only thing I don't like about it is that he died.
★ Rosalind and her banter with Coulson. That was a ship I could get behind. My only complaint is that, again, she is dead. I wish she wasn't. (Ooh! Can we get a Life Model Decoy of her, please?)
★ Jemma's arc this season on the blue planet. Her disappearance was a mystery plaguing me since last year, so finding out what the heck happened was really good. I loved the episode with her on her own, and I also enjoyed how the blue planet tied into the larger plot, culminating in the death of Grant Ward and the creation of Hive.
★ Hydra's origins, Death, and Hive. I loved how all these story threads came together. Hive himself was such an intriguing character, and I wish he had stuck around much longer (redemption arc, anyone?).
★ Mack. One of my favorite parts of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is always Mack.
Time to bring this back.
★ Fitzsimmons getting together. Finally. Also, neither of them died or got injured in the finale, so that's a major plus.
★ General Talbot. His role in this series was amusing.
★ The ending scene of the season 3 finale--Dr. Radcliffe, AIDA, and Life Model Decoy Technology. Guys, I'm still so excited. I probably will never stop talking about it.
★ Daisy's new look.
★ Daisy's new look.
My Least Favorite Aspects of Season 3
★ Overcrowding. While I loved pretty much every new character introduced, this meant that AOS felt overpopulated at times, and the characters suffered as a result by not getting nearly enough development or screen time. This seemed to improve when Hunter and Bobbi left, as much as I hate to say it.
★ I ended up disliking some characters, whether that's because of a lack of screen time or troublesome writing. I felt that I didn't get to know Lincoln nearly as well as I wanted to, and I barely liked him until the very end where he died. Daisy suffered the same problem--something about her annoyed me this season.
★ All the death. I mean, I know, I know. I should have seen it coming, but man, I miss the departed.
The Most Emotional Aspects of Season 3
★ Jemma crying on the Blue Planet. Ugh, it wrecked me.
★ Rosalind's death and Coulson's subsequent breakdown.
★ The Spy's Goodbye.
★ The Spy's Goodbye.
★ Daisy breaking down with Mack.
★ Lincoln's emotional goodbye to Daisy.
Favorite Episode: "Spacetime"
My favorite episode of the season was "Spacetime," which was beautifully written and shot. The visual effects were stunning and so were the parallels and deeper meanings. I loved that AOS delved into time travel, and one of my favorite motifs from this season was Charles' carved wooden bird. This was one of my favorite episodes of the whole show, not just this season.
Overall
Though AOS suffered from pacing and writing issues, season 3 was overall a fantastic installment in the continuing saga of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s finest agents. Its last few episodes did especially well, and I enjoyed the closing of this season much more than season 2's. This is one of the best seasons of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. yet, and it leaves us at a great place of infinite possibility for season 4. Ultimately, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s season 3 is one I won't be forgetting anytime soon.
What did you think of season 3?
