Star Wars Themed Jane the Virgin: 2x08 "Chapter Thirty" Recap

So Jane is back! But just for a week. *Cries* Also, seeing how it is Star Wars Week here on The Fangirl Initiative, today we will have a special Star Wars themed re-cap with all Star Wars gifs. Are you excited? Because I am.

We start with a flashback of young Jane near the Christmas season, angered when her mother ate all the chocolates she had saved. Smoke steams from her ears as she throws a tantrum. Later, Abuela aids her in her tantrum problem by telling her to think of things that makes her happy that spell out the word CALM.Cheese, Abuela, Lists, Monkey/Michael . She is then calmed. Flash forward to the present, we see Jane using this strategy as she storms out of Rafael's pent house, but when she thinks of Michael, it only makes things worse.
source
She rants to her family but calms down when she thinks of Mateo instead of Michael. The next day Jane is determined to make the Christmas happy and takes Mateo to see Santa. But when Rafael appears, she can't control her anger and almost force chokes Santa when he interrupts their fighting.
source
At home, Xo offers to pick up Mateo from Rafael's. This soothes Jane, but a person who is the opposite of soothed is Petra. She has to bleach the floor of Ivan's blood and starts hallucinating dead Ivan talking to her.
source
Meanwhile, Xo is at Rogelio's. Rogelio has hired an intern to read scripts for his a potential telenovelas. When Xo leaves, Rogelio asks the intern about the protocol for interacting with your daughter's ex. Rogelio really misses Michael, but the intern says what we're all thinking: it's definitely not cool. Speaking of Michael, he is busy with the Mutter (it was finally spelled on the screen, so indeed it is not mooter) drug lord case. Luisa appears saying she has reason to believe her mother is alive, evil drug lord and all.

We then go to Jane who confronts Wesley about the article he wrote. She goes to the Dean's office in hopes of punishment for Wesley but instead discovers there is a problem with her financial aid.A scholarship she believed she had really doesn't exist at all. It was really Rogelio paying for her tuition, and now he is broke. Jane goes to her professor and tells him about her problems. She wants a TA position, but it's really too late to apply. He instead offers a few short story competitions with cash prizes, but there are genre restrictions: historical fiction, thriller, and sci-fi. Jane has never written in any of these categories, but she is up for the challenge.
source
At the same time, Rogelio goes out of his way to get coffee at Michael's usual place, so he can see him. When he asks if it's all right to be friends, Michael declines, despite really wanting to. Rogelio is noticeably upset. Michael then goes back to his office where they are questioning Luisa, and Rafael also happens to be there. Luisa reveals she's been talking to Rose online for the past six months but not about anything criminal. Mainly other things. Bondage, being one.
source
Rafael is clearly upset. (Like seriously, you're in contact with the person who kidnapped your brother's son?!) Meanwhile, Jane talks to her family about possible financial plans, which they keep a secret from Rogelio because he believes the entire year was covered. Rogelio asks about where Rafael is for the Christmas celebrations, and she reveals she un-linked their calendars. Rafael is confused by this but even more confused when he sees his mother in the police station. She is there for questioning and tries to reach out to him, but he says he would never be like her and leave his son.

At the Villanueva house, they reminisce about Abuela's first Christmas in the U.S. The first Mateo made a wooden angel to put on top of the tree. When young Abuela discusses her troubles at work and Mateo tells her to calm down, we discover Jane is writing their story as historical fiction and struggling. But she must set her story aside when Rafael messages her about their calendars, and then in a heated argument, Rafael reveals he wants Mateo for Christmas, and he's willing to get lawyers involved.
source
Later, we see Abuela with Jane meeting their immigration lawyer, and there's still no info about the green card. Jane sneaks in a question about custody, and despite not being a custody lawyer, he suggests Jane look into Rafael's payment accounts. Apparently, as described in the article everyone has been reading, Rafael has made some shady payments. If Jane can find out what these payments are for she can use it against Rafael in a custody battle and possibly get full custody of Mateo. She again confronts Wesley and tells him she won't report him to the Dean if he gives her his source from inside the hotel. After confronting that source (assistant Scott), she gets an email and address to the place the payment was made and wonders what shady business Rafael is up to.
source
Meanwhile, Rafael goes to Petra wondering where she has been. Dead Ivan is still bugging her, but her mother shoos Rafael away, saying it is just blood sugar problems. Petra is really stressed and wants to confess. But her mother threatens her. Also, Michael is still dealing with the Mutter stuff. Susanna reveals Luisa was flirting with her, but that's brushed aside when they realize Mutter jumped off the cliff the same time as a tropical storm, which could have brought her body to shore.
source
We then go to Jane who is looking up the address and discovering it's in a shady part of town. She goes to the address anyway and follows Rafael down a sketchy alley, then into a building...and we discover she's short story writing again. She's still at her house and now has a good thriller but still wants to call the number Scott provided. When she does, she discovers Rafael was donating to a domestic violence shelter that wanted to remain anonymous. Meanwhile, Rogelio is distraught his intern told the press that Rogelio had a love affair with a guy named Charro (which he didn't. He just wanted a bromance back, which is weird. But whatever). Xo tells him she can talk to him, and he reveals he has held a bit of resentment at the fact that she kept Jane away from him for so long.
source
Later, Jane tells Xo about Rafael donating to a charity, and Xo thinks Rafael and Jane should get therapy. They agree and find a last minute person who is a bit opinionated. Meanwhile, Michael and Susana tell Luisa about a case of a person found on a beach with no memory, who is taken to an insane asylum, then transferred to a less restrictive asylum, and is probably Mutter. Back with Jane and Rafael, the therapist suggests looking at the situation from the other's point of view. After struggling with the exercise, they eventually begin to understand each other, and this leads to some kind of forgiveness.
source
Luisa is dealing with the Mutter stuff, going to the asylum where her mother supposedly is. She goes with Susanna, who poses as her wife, only to find the Mia there is not her mother at all. The cops believe it was an identity swap, where Mutter traded places with a mute person. Susanna comforts Luisa in the best way she can. At the same time, Rogelio is reading cliche scripts when his intern appears at the door. The intern reveals he is a shape-shifter and trades places with all the family members. And you guessed it! Jane is writing her sci-fi, which kind of sucks. No where near Star Wars level.
source
She discusses her options with Chavez, and he reveals the contest is for any genre, and he just wanted her to explore other things. Jane is a bit upset, but Chavez cheers her up when he reveals a TA position opened up because Wesley resigned. Back at the house, Rogelio confront the intern (whose name is JD, which I hadn't really paid attention to until now) about going to the press. JD says it wasn't him because there were other people giving them toe manicures who were in the room with them. JD is hurt and reveals he's a writer who wanted to show Rogelio his script but he was too egocentric to notice. He gives him his script, and leaves at the same time Jane comes back. Rogelio and Jane then have a nice heartfelt conversation about different things: Rafael, the years they spent apart, and his fake scholarship, which Jane still doesn't reveal to him didn't pay for the entire year. It's very sweet. Unlike another father/child duo I know of.

The family goes inside to decorate the tree but can't find the angel. Xo reveals it fell and cracked when she was getting things for the baptism a few months ago, but she left it in the box. Meanwhile, Petra and Rafael are at the doctor's office, and he reveals she really needs to calm her blood pressure because it's affecting the pregnancy. All the while, dead Ivan lingers in the background, so Petra caves and confesses everything to Rafael. But Rafael doesn't hate Petra and wants to help get her mother out of her life. Frankly, I think Petra and the show would benefit if Magda just...
Yeah....
source
Back with Jane, we learn Wesley was fired from his job because of the misconduct, and Chavez was the one who outed him. He encourages Jane to work on her story, and she does, only to find that the hero she pictures saving the girl is Michael.
source
She closes her laptop to join her family in Christmas celebrations and finds the Christmas angel in a box on her doorstep. A note is attached inside that reveals Michael took it after the baptism to fix and forgot to give it back. Also, the script JD wrote is apparently fantastic, and Abuela's green card came in. So it is indeed, a very merry Christmas in the Villanueva house.
source
But it's a different story at the Solano house, where Rafael is ready to call the police about Magda. Instead, Magda gets to them first, and the police arrest Petra under the belief that she killed Ivan.
source
Of course, we end there. Sadly, Jane the Virgin isn't coming back until January 25th, so until then our recaps must be put on pause. But you can console yourself by watching Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Hopefully the awesome that comes out of that movie will hold us for the month ahead.

What did you think of the mid-season finale?
