8 Reasons Why Marvel's Sam Wilson Is Underrated

I don’t know if you’ve been keeping up with Marvel movies as of late, but there’s a new guy on the team and he is awesome. Who, you may ask?

The amazing Falcon, also known as Sam Wilson.

Sam Wilson first showed up in the opening scenes of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. He was the recipient of that famous line--”on your left”--and became both Steve’s friend… and ours. But despite his epically charming character, I don’t see a lot of love for this fabulous soldier. So I’m here to give you reasons why Sam Wilson is underrated… and why you should love him too.

1. He’s adorable.

Okay, just look at this face.

2. He’s loyal.

You need a friend? Look no further than Sam Wilson. Let’s remember that Sam had barely known Steve before he invited him into his home, even when it could have brought danger to Sam himself (and it did).

Sam hadn’t known Steve very long when he decided to help Steve track down Bucky and help him.

Sam goes the extra mile… and beyond that.

3. He’s cool.

He has wings. He has awesome goggles. He can fly. What more could you ask for?

And I don’t know if you saw Ant-Man, but despite the fact that he got beaten by Scott Lang, I maintain my belief that Sam is one of the coolest superheroes around.

4. He’s witty.

...and exhibit B.

5. He doesn’t put up with nonsense.

6. He takes things in stride.

While Sam doesn’t put up with nonsense, he does deal with superheroes and weird occurrences on a daily basis... and surprisingly, he doesn’t freak out. Instead, he deals with it calmly and rationally. A supersoldier and Russian spy want to stay with him? No problem. He needs to bring out the ol’ wings and defend the world from a metal-armed brainwashed Winter Soldier? Okay, sure, why not?

Sam’s here for it all, and he adjusts to the weird, alien-and-magic-and-confusing world of Marvel with a surprising amount of ease. If there’s anyone you want on your team when aliens invade New York or Hydra rears its ugly head, you know who to call.

7. He provides valuable representation.

Media reflects real life, and because of this, it’s extremely important that we have fictional role models from all walks of life. There haven’t been many people of color in the Marvel Cinematic Universe thus far, so Sam Wilson and his expanding role, particularly as part of the New Avengers, is extremely vital.

Anthony Mackie himself said that he was excited to take the role because he would see a tiny Falcon on his doorstep on Halloween.

Sure enough…

Little boys like this tiny Halloween Falcon need superheroes like them to look up to. For many, Sam is this superhero. It makes my little fangirl heart proud.

8. He is an Avenger.

Words cannot express how excited I was to see my baby in Avengers: Age of Ultron, and then the last scene of the movie left me screaming as well. In the comics, Sam is currently the latest Captain America, which I find to be totally epic. Whether that comes to play in the movies or not, one thing’s for sure: Sam Wilson is here to stay. He’s been grafted into the Avengers, and we’re going to see much more of him. That’s one reason why you should fall head over heels in love with him.

And… did I mention, he’s got great wings?

What about you? Why do you think Sam Wilson is underrated?
