Arrow Reaction: "Penance" (5x04)

Warning: Arrow contains PG-13 level content. Spoilers included.

Oliver takes a break from training his new recruits and being mayor to bust Diggle out of prison; only Diggle doesn't want to leave. Meanwhile, Church makes his own plans to wreck havoc on the city, leaving the New Team Arrow as the only ones left to stop him.

What I Liked
Team Arrow
The New Team Arrow continues to improve while still making mistakes. This episode, however, was different because they banded together not once, but twice to do the right thing. Curtis showed off some pretty sick moves, and Evelyn--who is now known as Artemis(!!!)--proves to be a voice of reason for the team. I'm also glad Rory is back; I was going to be so sad if he left for good. Wild Dog continues to be wild.

This is just so cool. And kind of creepy. But cool. (source)

Russia flashbacks
The Russian scenes in this episode were insane. I am thoroughly enjoying this part of Oliver's journey. There has been a lot of unexpected twists lately. I can't wait to find out what else shaped Oliver into the man he is today.

Oliver and Diggle
While I think the whole prison break idea was not good, I'm glad Oliver and Diggle are finally reunited. Maybe Diggle can rejoin Team Arrow to help Oliver train, since he's trying to lay low. I honestly don't know what Diggle is going to do now that he's a fugitive. That was not a plot line I ever thought would happen.

Bros for life. (source)

Rory
Once more, I felt bad for Rory and Felicity in this episode. Felicity is feeling a lot of guilt still, but she's trying to move past that and reach out to Rory. I'm glad they were able to come to some kind of understanding and try to move forward together. Plus, we got to see more of Rory outside of the whole "rags" thing, so that was cute. (He's just cute.)

They're both just so cute. (source)

Wild Dog
At the beginning of the episode, I was annoyed with Wild Dog again. He never listens, and he always does what he thinks is best, which never pans out. But by the end of the episode, I held a deeper respect for him. He may be gusty, but that also means he doesn't hesitate, even if that means facing down Church. He went after him in order to help his team. And at the end, he continued to stand up to him despite being tied up and tortured. Respect, man.

Why is this so funny? (source)

What I Didn't Like
Prison break
I don't know why, but I didn't find the prison break sequence to be that thrilling. It was kind of just "eh" for me. It seemed too easy for Oliver, despite the tensions they tried to add. I guess I just really don't care about anything not related to the Green Arrow and Star City. Oops?

Church
Oh, Church. I continue to hate his character and anything he does. I just don't care about him. I know nothing about him or what he wants to do. I'm not really scared of him; I think Oliver and Team Arrow will be able to handle him when the time comes. He's just super annoying about everything he does. Go away. Just gooooo.

Overall, the episode had good moments that made me happy and excited, but at the same time, there was a lot that I just felt apathetic about. It happens. I'm still looking forward to what happens next, though.

Oliver Queen=definition of "cool." (source)
